Bushwalking, river views & wildlife

There is a short bush walk in front of the property that goes to the South Esk River where you may be lucky enough to encounter Australian wildlife animals such as wallaby, kangaroo, echidna and possum, as well as some fauna unique to Tasmania. To quote from the Parks & Wildlife Service Tasmania, http://www.parks.tas.gov.au:

“Tasmania has many unique mammals found nowhere else in the world. Some, like the Tasmanian devil and Tasmanian tiger are well-known (now extinct). Others, such as the eastern quoll, pademelon and bettong are less well-known, but equally fascinating.

 

“Like most of Australia’s mammals, the Tasmanian mammal fauna comprises many marsupials, or pouched mammals. Marsupials are remarkable for their method of reproduction, such as the production of very tiny young which complete their development in a pouch.

“Tasmania has many species which have become, or are on the verge of extinction on mainland Australia. The lack of introduced predators and the relatively large amount of intact habitat on the island, make Tasmania a final refuge – a last chance – for many species. However, the potential establishment of European foxes in Tasmania has raised grave concerns about the continued existence of these species.

“There are 33 native terrestrial and 41 marine mammals which are known to occur in Tasmania. They include platypus, echidna, Tasmanian devil, quoll, antechinus, dunnart, bandicoot, possums, sugar glider, wombat, bats, fur seals, whales and dolphins.”

It’s also interesting to note that “Eleven species of frog are found in Tasmania. These include three endemic species and two threatened species.”

 

Bird watching

Launceston Wildlife Retreat is on the South Esk River which is a haven for birds and wildlife animals. Birdwatchers may be interested in the following information, which comes from the Parks & Wildlife Service Tasmania at http://www.parks.tas.gov.au:

 “Tasmania has twelve species of bird which are found nowhere else on Earth (i.e. endemic birds). There are also a number of species which are endemic at the subspecies level, such as the threatened wedge-tail eagle, and a number of species which are known as breeding endemics. Breeding endemics breed only in Tasmania and migrate to mainland Australia outside the breeding season. The endangered orange-bellied parrot and swift parrot are two such species.” 

 

Waterfront

The property is within 50 meters from the waterfront with expansive river views. All rooms overlook the South Esk River, and there is a small bush walk to the river where you may see Australian wildlife creatures such as birds, potoroos, echidnas, wallabies and possums, these wildlife animals also visit the retreat’s backyard.

 

Canoeing & Kayaking

Guests welcome to bring their own canoe/kayak. Secure storage facilities are available. Our property is on the waterfront and access to the river for canoe/kayaking is within walking distance.

 

Golf

The Launceston golf club with its beautiful golf course is a bus ride away or a 5 minute drive.

 

Close to Public Transport

A bus service is a 5 min walk which takes you to Launceston and the casino and golf club.
